What a sad and pathetic end…caught in a sewer pipe with a golden pistol.  Sounds like the title of a Beatles song.  Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds & Maxwell’s silver Hammer.

Thein Sein welcoming back Burmese citizens who live in foreign countries to come back home to Burma.

The invitation is for them to work for the development of the nation.

To date I have been creating sculptures in two categories:
1.  Burma’s Heroes
2.  Cheap Tin Soldiers: the Dictators.

I am adding a new category devoted to the looney, bizarre and the nut cases.
The first of these is Mummar Gadhafi (Go-Daffy) with a head (6″) and a small figure (7″0). Of course with figures like Gadhafi it is difficult to place him in only one category.

My work on Gadhafi was spurred by the news coming out of the middle east and north Africa.  Whenever I can not escape the barrage of images and bloviating of politicians, dictators and nut cases, I retaliate by doing caricatures.  This makes the news endurable and my work enjoyable.
One aspect of the world dynamic that saddens and haunts me is Burma’s position in all of this change.  No country needs or deserves change more than Burma but it is being left behind by history. I wonder if the generals are watching the “arab spring”, the demand for democracy and the end to tyranny.  Are they fearful?
Is this information getting into Burma and it’s people?  Are they encouraged, hopeful and energized?

As we moved into the 1990s the world saw the collapse of communism, the demonstrations for freedom and democracy in Burma and the ending of apartheid in Africa.  Dramatic changes occurred in the world but Burma was left behind.
I have spent a great deal of my life in southeast Asia.  I have witnessed the revitalization of Vietnam in spite of a history of warfare on it’s soil.  I see the hopefulness that tourism and business is now bringing to Cambodia, a country whose future was nearly erased by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.  And still Burma, a country of great natural resources and potential, continues to be left behind.

Few countries have as brutal and stifling a regime as the dictatorship in Burma.  A regime which continues to negate the countries future and destroy the individual lives and potential of its citizens. They are robbing entire generations of the right to live fulfilling lives and the opportunity to achieve their full potential.  While the leaders live like kings, their negative impact on individual lives is enormous and devastating.

When I am bombarded by images of politicians, world leaders, egomaniacal dictators and bona fide nut cases, rather than being annoyed I fire back with a salvo of caricatures.
With Libya and Gaddafi headlining the news now and with Gaddafi currently leading the coo coo parade I can’t resist.
