Burmese Embassy Held Unfair Election in London

Burmese embassy in London took extremely dishonest, dishonourable and unlawful measures to rig expatriates’ votes in the UK for Burma’s sham 2010 elections.

Burmese embassy secretly sent invitations to only a handful of Burmese citizens living in the UK who are very friendly with the embassy. Burmese embassy did not send invitation to the rest of thousands of Burmese people living in the UK. Burmese embassy did not make any efforts to notify and alert the expatriate Burmese in London about its plans to secretly hold early overseas voting on 16.10.10 for sham Burmese elections 2010 scheduled in Burma for 07.11.2010.

Moreover, to make sure that only a handful of pro-regime people will be able to vote, and to turn away any other potential voters, Burmese embassy hired menacing looking private securities to stop uninvited voters coming to cast their votes. (See in photos below).

Burma Liberation Front got information about Burmese embassy’s unlawful unfair voting arrangement from our reliable informants in the UK Myanmar community.

So we sent our own members who hold Burmese passports to demand at Burmese embassy to allow them to exercise their legitimate citizens’ rights to cast their votes for parties of their choice.

But, Burmese embassy deployed their private securities to stop our members from entering the embassy building. Our members were stopped at the embassy doorstep, and searched by securities and their passports checked, and their personal details were taken. Although our members could show their genuine Burmese passports, ALL of them were turned away by the embassy staff who thoroughly checked their passports and IDs.

So, our members held a demonstration in front of Burmese embassy, from 9am to 3pm on Saturday 16.10.10, despite bad weather and heavy rains, to protest Burmese embassy’s dishonest unfair elitist early overseas voting which was open only for a small number of hand-picked pro-regime voters.
