Dear All,

If you haven’t booked your tickets for the Burmese Arts Festival Fundraiser here at the Free Word Centre on Friday 30 July yet, here are some great reasons to do so now!

We are delighted to be screening exclusive excerpts from ‘THIS PRISON WHERE I LIVE’ – a film about two comedians.

Maung Thura, better known as Zarganar, is Burma’s greatest living comic. Relentlessly victimised by the Burmese military junta, he is currently serving a 35 year prison sentence. Michael Mittermeier, in stark contrast, is free to practise his art of humour and provocation as one of Germany’s leading stand up comedians.

Two men are joined by comedy and separated by repression.  Michael’s exploration into the personality, the motivation and the talent of the man who describes himself as the “loudspeaker” for his people, which premiered in Germany last month.

We are also delighted to be showing the UK premiere of  BURMESE THEATRE WORKSHOP’s new show ‘Beyond Nargis’. The piece takes the audience back to Burma in May 2008 as the population struggles to cope with the effects of the worst natural disaster in living memory, Cyclone Nargis. Travelling from the country’s Golden Pagoda to the devastated Delta Region, they will present a variety of stories from those affected by Nargis.

BURMESE ARTS FESTIVAL AUCTION:  a number of the artists taking part in the inaugural Burmese Arts Festival, including festival curator Htein Lin, have very kindly agreed to auction pieces of their work on 30 July.

There will also be a BURMESE ARTS FESTIVAL RAFFLE and DELICIOUS BURMESE FOOD

To book your tickets which cost £20, please call info@freewordonline.com or on 020 7324 2570

All proceeds go to paying for flights to bring Burmese artists over to London for the festival and for festival production costs.  There are no administrative costs.  We have a target of £5,000 and so far have raised over £500 from direct donations.  If you cannot make the event, but would like to support us, please send a cheque to Index on Censorship, made payable to ‘Writers and Scholars Educational Trust’.

I look forward to seeing you here next week.

With best wishes

Julia
