More 60 Rohingya refugees to settle in England more

Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh: Sixty Burmese refugees from Nayapara and Kutupalong camps in Bangladesh will go to a third country soon as part of a resettlement programme, said a refugee leader from Nayapara camp.
Seven families comprising 41 members from Nayapara camp and 19 members from four families from Kutupalong camp, totaling 60 refugees, including women and children will fly soon to the United Kingdom (UK) from Dhaka airport.
They are being trained in Dhaka to adjust to the culture and laws of the host country where they will be resettled. They will be flown to England in two phases, another refugee from Kutupalong camp said.
Recently, nine refugees from the Kutupalong camp and five refugees from the Nayapara camp were flown to New Zealand and Australia respectively.
Earlier too England had received 109 Rohingya refugees as part of a resettlement programme.

Two Burmese Refugees Arrested with Counterfeit Notes

By Takaloo, Cox’sbazar; Two Burmese Muslim refugees from Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar District in southern Bangladesh were arrested by local police on Wednesday for possessing counterfeit notes and equipment for forging local currency, said a refugee school teacher.
The teacher said that the accused were caught by police deployed for camp security after they caught a refugee child who came to buy snacks from a local shop with a fake 500 taka note.
“The police were able to arrest them on the tip of a local shopkeeper that a refugee child came to buy from his shop with a fake 500 taka note,” he said on the condition of anonymity to Narinjara.
He added that the counterfeiters were traced with the help of the refugee child and were identified as Abdu Salam, 38 years old, and Mohammad Rafique, 31 years old, both registered refugees from Kutupalong refugee camp.
The Ukia police station in Cox’s Bazaar District confirmed the arrest of those refugees who possessed 1,500 counterfeit 500 taka notes, three slates of black glass, three rolls of copy paper, three rolls of glass paper, one roll of silver ribbon, one roll of tape, scissors, and other equipment used for counterfeiting.
Shah Uddin, the police officer responsible for camp security said that the accused were expected to have used the faked notes for the coming Koraban, a religious festival in Islam tradition.
According to the teacher, the two men may have taken the risk with the notes because life inside the refugee camp has become increasingly difficult.
“Any refugee can risk their lives if their belly is not properly filled, because the UNCHR can not meet the daily needs of refugees sufficiently and Bangladesh authorities have restricted the movements of refugees going outside the camps to work for alternative incomes to feed their family,” he said.

Chin food crisis worsened by locusts and unusual wind

The ongoing food crisis initially caused by a plague of rats has gone from bad to worse due to the unexpected outbreak of crop-devouring swarms of locusts and sparrows in Burma’s Chin State.
And this year’s crop yields have plunged to a record low as a result of the unusual ‘warm wind’ in September that made the crops parched and unproductive in the mautam-affected areas.
Some villages with farmers predicting for this year a total crop yield of 400 buckets (1 bucket = 10.5kg) from their paddy fields have now got about 50 buckets or less, according to a recent survey by cross-border relief aids groups.
Making another fact-finding trip to Indian-Burma border, Victor Biak Lian of CHRO (Chin Human Rights Organisation) said: “I would like to repeat the existence of food crisis in our land and now it is not only the rats that cause problems to our people but also grain-eating birds and crop-destroying wind that make the situation worse. Let’s make our mind clear and work together to help our brothers and sisters fight against starvation.”
Recently, another new wave of an estimated 2,000 Khumi-Chins in Southern Chin State have fled into Mizoram State of India in search of food, he added.
Reports confirmed that this crisis has not only divided families but also torn communities and villages apart, pushing children to drop out of schools in order to help find edible foods in the jungles.
In some bamboo-covered areas of Southern Chin State, the bamboo seeds begin to grow flowering and bearing fruits just after germination.
General Secretary of Zomi Baptist Convention, Rev. M. Thawng Kam, said: “Mautam has not for sure ended in Chin State. People in some areas have gradually seen a positve change but their sufferings have not ended immediately as the effects of mautam still continue.”
“There are some new areas that are worst hit by mautam in Southern Chin State such as Paletwa township. And there are still some mautam-hit victims who have not received any relief aids till today due to difficult communication and transport. Our people need a collaborative and collective support.”
As part of global campaign against starvation in Chin State, a series of concerts has since late 2008 been organised by Chin communities in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Norway, UK and USA, with aims of raising awareness and fund for mautam-hit victims in Chin State.
Food assistance has been delivered to some areas by both international and local NGOs as well as cross-border aid groups. But there are many mautam-affected villages in the remote region of Chin State that have not been reached until today due to difficult access.
Locally known as mautam, the ongoing food crisis has been ravaging Chin State since 2007 after a once-every-fifty-year natural phenomenon in which bamboos flower and bear fruits started in late 2008. The rats, after eating the flowers and fruits, start to make a dramatic increase in their population and subsequently turn to forage on crops, stored grains and barns. This results in the birth of the so-called mautam food crisis.

A Chin Christian refugee, Lian Do Cin, has been taken to hospital in Malaysia after praying and fasting for a total of 40 days in a bid to get a UNHCR refugee registration card.
The 39-year-old truck driver, of Sizang Chin tribe from Burma’s Chin State, became fainted and ‘unconscious’ in his friend’s flat where he prayed and fasted, and was rushed to UKM Hospital in Kuala Lumpur on 11 November 2009.
Living in another place miles away from the Malaysian capital, Pu Lian Do Cin, an ACR (Alliance of Chin Refugees) card holder, was said to have come to his friend’s flat in Kuala Lumpur.
Pu Lian Do Cin, who has been living in Malaysia for a few years, decided to fast and pray in desperation after failures in his several attempts to get the UNHCR card.

Fake note printing equipments seized in refugee camp

Ukhiya, Bangladesh: Bangladesh police on duty in Burmese refugee camps seized some equipment from the Kutupalang official camp for printing fake currency notes of the denomination of 500. They also arrested three men on suspicion, said a refugee leader from the camp.
Some of the refugees from the camp informed the camp police and the arrest was made with the help of refugees, said a refugee.
Police seized 1,500 pieces of quality paper on which they had planned to print fake 500 notes, one pair of scissors, one rubber seal, one electric tape, three pieces of plain black mirrors, three pieces of cable, a bundle of rubber, three small machines with which the number of notes are printed and two tins of chemicals, according to the police.
At first, police arrested 12 refugees including Md. Rofique of Block B and Bangladeshi Abdu Salam (40), son of Fazal Karim from Portia of Chittagong district. Abdu Salam is the main culprit who went to the camp and slept at the shed of a refugee named Ali. He managed to escape, but his son was arrested. All the equipments were seized from Ali’s shed.
However, all the arrested refugees were released after interrogation by the police except Fazal Karim, Md. Rofique and son of Ali. But, the police have to arrest another 4 to 6 persons regarding the matter, according to a police official.
The arrested persons were sent to Cox’s Bazaar jail through Ukiya police station following interrogation. The arrestees will be sentenced to 10 years to 30 years in prison, if they are found guilty. A case has been filed with the police station according to Bangladeshi Act No, 25.
There are over 8,000 refugees living in Kutopalong official camp and approximately 30,000 unofficial refugees living in the nearby Kutupalong camp, according to a refugee leader from the camp.
