Burmese House Maid Found Dead

According to the Thairat and Daily News newspapers, a Burmese maid was shot in the kitchen of her Thai house owner. Ma Tin, the 17 year old victim, was working at 4376, Laphalaun 101, Bankapi, Bangkok when she was shot and killed at around 11 pm on the 7th of June.
The house guard heard the gun shot and ran to ring the house bell. Karnananukit, the 56-year old female host, came out and they went into the kitchen together, where they then found her dead body with a 2 mm pistol, three bullet shells.
Karnan said to the police, “I didn’t hear the gun shot because I was in the bathroom. We gave her the gun so that she can protect herself in case of emergency and we are away.” The husband of Karnan was a retired officer from the Thai army. Wan Chai, the criminal investigator, said, “We’re trying to find out the truth here.”
According to the Thairat article, Ma Tin had been working at Karnan’s house for six years, but the Daily News said that she worked at her employer’s house for only two years. The body has already been sent to the hospital for further investigation. A human rights organization is also looking into the case in order to find out the victim’s address in Burma and any other useful infomation to help solve the case.
A similar situation occurred in June 2002, another Burmese maid by the name of Ma Soe, was burnt and killed by her Thai employer. The crime took two years to solve, but eventually her employer was arrested. Many Burmese women who come and work as house maids in Thailand, are often faced with grave dangers of sexual and other forms of abuse, violence, exploitation, and are often totally isolated from the outside world.

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Burmese migrants working in Thailand and Malaysia have released a joint statement on the impact of the global economic crisis on Burmese migrant workers, urging relevant governments to address their concerns.
Burmese migrants, support groups, trade union leaders, human rights activists and lawyers from Thailand and Malaysia noted in a statement released on Tuesday following a conference in Bangkok that the Thai and Malaysian governments’ response to the situation of migrant workers affected by the economic crisis has not been comprehensive, failing to provide adequate protection for workers.
“Migrant workers are not even included in these [economic assistance] programs and are thus expected to deal with the impact of the economic crisis by themselves,” according to the release.
“Employers must not use the economic crisis as an excuse to dismiss workers or close down factories without adequate notice to the workers,” added the group.
They also noted that employers currently fail to adequately compensate migrant workers, calling for the establishment of a mechanism to ensure just compensation in addition to appealing for equal access to programs aimed at lessening hardship stemming from the economic crisis.
Specifically, the group seeks the abolition of Malaysia’s ‘Foreign Workers First Out’ principle – a policy necessitating migrant workers lose their jobs before local workers in times of crisis regardless of time on the job.
Burmese migrants in both Malaysia and Thailand have also reported accidents in the workplace due to sub-standard occupational health and safety standards and enforcement.
“The governments of Thailand and Malaysia should ensure that employers do not take shortcuts on matters concerning health and safety of workers and facilitate migrants’ access to the legal mechanisms to receive compensation when accidents do occur,” argues the consortium.
Further, due to the undocumented status of many parents, migrant children often have difficulty in accessing education. As a result, the group calls for the governments of both countries to support the education of migrant children in both formal and non-formal education systems.
The group is additionally concerned for those migrants lacking official status or without full status. In such an atmosphere, without proper protective mechanisms in place, it is said migrants can be subjected to the arbitrary decisions or desires of employers and governments alike.
Because of their lack of protection, migrants face an increased risk of arrest, detention and deportation. “We are deeply concerned about the recent reports of deaths of migrants in detention in Malaysia, deaths which could have been avoided with proper access to health care,” stipulate the aggrieved.
The statement concluded by calling for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and its constituent parts to abandon their constructive engagement policy toward the Burmese regime which, they contend, serves merely to prolong the injustice in Burma.
The joint declaration followed the second Two Destinations One Origin Conference organized by the MAP Foundation (Thailand), Workers Hub for Change (WH4C) and Network of Action for Migrants in Malaysia (NAMM).

Misery for Karen Refugees

“Whenever I see a Burmese soldier, I feel fear and hate. They have no hearts,” said Naw Kee Lar, a 35-year-old Karen woman who left her home and sought temporary shelter in Thailand.
She fled to Thailand because of ongoing attacks launched by joint Burmese and Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) troops in the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) Brigade 7 area of southern Karen State.
Naw Kee Lar, who lives in a village called Wa Mee Klar, said all the villagers fled to Thailand when Burmese and DKBA troops fired mortars into the village.
“It wasn’t just the mortars. If we had stayed we would have been arrested and forced to become porters,” she said, speaking softly in the Karen language.
Naw Kee Lar is one of an estimated 6000 Karen refugees who have fled from Pa-an district in Karen State to Tha Song Yang district in Tak Province of Thailand since early May.
Most of the refugees are women and children. Some of the women are pregnant and some have babies. “One woman even gave birth in a monastery as soon as she arrived in Thailand,” she said.
Saw Hla Htun, the chairman of the Karen Youth Organization which is currently helping the refugees, said women and children are the most vulnerable, especially as it has been raining and there is no shelter on the trails to the border.
Many of the children, women and elders are suffering from malaria, sources reported.
The refugees are now being taken care of by Karen relief groups, such as the Karen Refugee Committee, as well as by the Thailand Burma Border Consortium.
Karen sources also said that the joint force from the Burmese army and the DKBA plan to attack all KNLA controlled military camps along the Thai-Burma border.
Refugees in Mae La refugee camp are worried as they have heard that the Burmese and DKBA troops plan to launch attacks along the border near the refugee camp.
Some youngsters from Mae La camp were reportedly called up to serve as security guards if conditions become worse, said refugee sources.
The DKBA, an armed group that separated from the KNU in 1995, joined forces with the Burmese and started to attack the KNLA’s Brigade 7 in the first week of June.
More than 20 soldiers from the joint force have been killed in recent attacks, while there are no reports of deaths from the KNLA, the military wing of the Karen National Union announced.
The joint force is reportedly planning to keep attacking KNLA Brigade 7 until they have taken the entire area under its control. The same sources said the joint force may loose about 500 soldiers in the operation.
The most recent attacks were being launched by Burmese battalions under Light Infantry Division 22 and DKBA battalions 999, 555 and 333. The force is reportedly about 9,000 soldiers strong, according to Karen sources.
Zipporah Sein, general-secretary of the KNU, said the attacks show that the Burmese military have no intention of finding a peaceful solution to its conflict with the KNU and ethnic groups.
A recent KNU statement said the attacks against Karen villagers were an attempt to eliminate the Karen people.
“The Burmese regime’s recent order to the DKBA to turn its troops into a border guard force under the Ministry of Defense will make the DKBA into regime slaves,” the statement said.
Zipporah Sein also reminded the DKBA that it is being used as a tool of the Burmese regime to oppress Karen people, and she urged the DKBA to reconsider its military activities against Karen civilians.
“The DKBA soldiers are clearly being used by the Burmese army. During fighting, the DKBA soldiers must stay in the front line and serve as minesweepers while the Burmese soldiers stay back and fire mortars,” said Zipporah Sein.
“The Burmese regime wants to let the Karen fight and kill each other,” said Zipporah Sein. “The DKBA should reconsider whether they want to be a Burmese tool to kill Karen people,” she added.
William Spindler, the spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday, June 9, that the UNHCR is working closely with Thai authorities on how best to respond to the needs of the newcomers, whose numbers are thought to range from 2,000 to 6,400.
“One of the first things we would like to do is ascertain the number of people who are in the five sites near Mae Sot,” said Spindler.
“Most of the new arrivals say they want to stay as close to their villages as possible in order to go home quickly once the situation calms down, because they left cattle behind and because it is time to begin planting rice,” said Spindler.
Naw Kee Lar said she is fed up with the military conflicts, which have brought her nothing but suffering for a long time.
“We don’t want this fighting. All we want is to be left in peace in our homes,” she said.

FBR REPORT: DKBA troops threaten to shell Thai villagers if they do not supply food in support of attack on refugees

The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, which fights alongside the Burma Army, has threatened to shell Thai villagers if they do not supply food to them in support of their attack on Ler Per Her refugee camp. Noh Bo village is a few kilometers away from Ler Per Her camp on the Thai side of the Moei River.
The DKBA and Burma Army began an attack on Ler Per Her refugee camp on June 7, raining shells on the area around the camp. The DKBA made the threat to shell Noh Bo villagers after beginning shelling in Burma opposite Noh Bo at 8am on June 8.
On June 7, DKBA soldiers also launched an attack on the KNLA 7th Brigade Headquarters opposite Mae Salik in Tak Province north of Mae Sot. The DKBA and Burma Army soldiers have reinforced at Mae Tha Waw and are expected to continue attacking.
Partners Relief and Development and Free Burma Rangers are providing help to some 3,521 refugees who have fled the camp at Ler Per Her. They are supplying food, clothes, plastic, tarps and mosquito repellant. Villagers who have fled are particularly facing problems with malaria, Acute Respiratory Infections and diarrhea.
24 soldiers from the Burma Army and Democratic Karen Buddhist Army have been killed or injured in the fighting. In three days of fighting, no casualties have been reported among the Karen National Liberation Army soldiers trying to prevent them overrunning 7th Brigade HQ and Ler Per Her refugee camp. FBR received reports that shelling lasted all day on June 9 and began again at 8am on June 10, particularly in the areas opposite Noh Bo and around the 7th Brigade Headquarters.
More Attacks in Northern Karen State
Meanwhile in northern Karen State, the Burma Army attacked in the Ho Kee and Ha To Per villages in Tantabin township, Toungoo district on June 5.
More than 100 villagers have fled into the jungle since the attack began. Khin Maung Sin took over as commander of the Military Operation Command 5 and leader of Kler Ler camp after the previous commander died.

Burmese refugees rebuild community through a garden

MASON – Htoi Mai Sum Du fled Burma as a 17-year-old a year ago, unwilling to perform forced labor for the military-run government.
Yu Sup, a 50-year-old Muslim religious leader, left neighbors and relatives behind in the war-torn country because the Burmese government confiscated their land and drove him and his wife away.
Thaung Hlaing left because his small farming village was caught on the battlefield between the army and rebel militias.
These people, and approximately 300 other Burmese refugees in the Lansing area, had to leave behind everything and everyone they knew to seek a new, peaceful life. But a gardening project near Mason is helping them rebuild a sense of community.
The 60 families who work this three-acre plot of land are refugees from Myanmar, the Southeast Asian country that is still called Burma by those who don’t recognize the legitimacy of the ruling military junta.
“In Burma, people were persecuted and discriminated against on the basis of their religion or ethnicity,” said Zo Kunga, a case manager with Lutheran Social Services, who left the country in 1996. Because he speaks fluent English, Kunga acts as an unofficial liaison between the new arrivals and the surrounding community.
An oasis
The garden is meant to be a different sort of space.
“In the garden, we are one people,” Kunga said. “There is no more discrimination, no more lines of religion or ethnicity.”
Kunga also is a refugee. He had to flee the country after organizing a social welfare agency and documenting civil rights abuses there and smuggling the evidence out of the country.
He’s still organizing on behalf of his people. Now, he works to help other Burmese create a new life in Lansing.
“It is a manifestation of faith,” Kunga said. “It’s my passion in life.”
The garden itself is a lifeline of sorts. By Kunga’s estimate, there are about 300 Burmese refugees in the Lansing area. Most have arrived in the past three years. Most are still learning English. Many are unemployed. As of last year, only six adults had a driver’s license.
“We are not in a position to buy fresh vegetables or organic vegetables from the market,” Kunga said.
But the vast majority of the community had been upland farmers in their home country. They know how to grow vegetables.
Filling a great need
The garden means more than food, however.
“The garden project is very crucial,” Hlaing said, speaking through Kunga’s translation. “It gives us a sense of belonging.”
Last spring, Gary and Trudy Smith donated a portion of their Mason area farm to that cause.
“They seemed to take such great joy in being able to raise their vegetables,” Gary Smith said, “and most of them are in such need of everything. We feel that we have so much that we need to share what we have.”
Last year, the community planted 39 different kinds of vegetables, some of them familiar to most Michiganders – tomatoes, eggplants, broccoli, chili peppers – and some of them not.
“They have these string beans that are about 3 feet long,” Smith said. “There’s little different types of squashes that we don’t raise. And there’s things I don’t know the name of.”
The community has gotten help along the way from several Presbyterian churches in the area.
One, Mt. Hope Presbyterian, provides worship space to the Ethnic Nationalities Christian Fellowship, a group of Burmese Christians, and has donated tools and labor to the garden.
Others offer English classes and assist refugees in adapting to America and to Lansing.
The garden project got a $15,000 grant from the Presbytery of Lake Michigan, which paid for tools, for compost, for plants.
Kunga had just received word that a second grant, for $20,000, had come through from the General Assembly of Presbyterian Church USA. That money will go toward drilling a well on the property and installing a windmill for irrigation.
‘Walk with nature’
Down the road, the hope is to begin growing a few cash crops, Kunga said, corn, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries.
But, for now, the garden feeds the families who work the land. It gives them time away from the apartments where most have been resettled to “walk with nature,” Kunga said, “which is very therapeutic.” It gives them a place to erase ethnic and religious divisions.
“They come here with nothing and struggle, particularly in our economy, to make ends meet,” Smith said. “To kind of see the happiness that they had with going home with stuff they had raised, that was pretty neat.”
