VOTE FOR BURMA’S PERSON OF THE YEAR 2008
Oct 30th, 2008
Of course, the Cyclone Nargis and the rigged referendum are the most important happenings, so far, in Burma in the year 2008.
The Cyclone Nargic killed more than 100,000 people, but it also seems to have killed off efforts by the United Nations to force Burmese Generals towards sincere democratic reforms. To be able to send aid-workers into Burma, Ban Ki-Moon had to agree to put humanitarian missions above democratization. Now, Ban Ki-Moon’s envoy Gambari is even acting like an agent of the junta in pressuring Burma’s National League for Democracy to take part in the coming 2010 general elections, despite huge amounts of clear evidence that junta has rigged May 2008 constitutional referendum and will do exactly the same in the coming elections in 2010.
The events in 2008, including Cyclone Nargis, its chaotic aftermath, Than Shwe’s rigged referendum, its resulting junta-glorifying constitution, and Gambari’s over-zealous attempts to kowtow to military Generals, are all pushing Burma’s politics towards inevitable changes_ for better or for worse_ most obsevers will say its for worse.
Who played the most significant role for all the changes in Burma in 2008?
YOU DECIDE who is the most important political persona of 2008 in Burma.
You can vote for a particular person – Mr A, Ms B, Dr C, etc; or a class of persons – the students, the monks, the soldiers, etc.
You can vote in TWO ways:
- In Previous years, we found out that majority of people send their votes by email. So, if you also want to cast your vote by email, please send “the name of the person of your choice” and “the reason why you choose him/her” either in English or Burmese language, to burmadigest @ googlemail.com . . . [OR] . . .
- You can write down “the name of the person of your choice” and “the reason why you choose him/her” in English language ONLY, in the comment box below.
* * *
THE COMBINED RESULT of all the email votings and web votings will be declared just before the end of the year 2008.

I norminated Dr. Sein Win. He is a real man who can have a baby in 60s. He serves his country by making a new baby to continue the revolution. He is a true generation maker.

I norminate U Bo Bo Kyaw Nyein and U Maung Maung. Both are true leaders who sacrifice their life and property to prmote democracy movement. U Maung Maung supports ‘real’ fighters by risking his life. military is now searching him. U Bo Bo Kyaw Nyein donates half of his saving to the pro-democracy movement. He does not even get remarried to support democracy in burma. They are true heroes.

I think that U Maung Maung General Secretary of the NCUB should be nominated for having wqorked with NUCB and MPU to challenge the credentials of the military junta at the UN and for having supported the fight against forced labour and for the promotionof freedom of association particularly at the ILO, thus supporting the request for an urgent advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the violation of the ILO Convention 29 on forced labour that is recognised as a crime against humanity.

I agree with Ko Lu Maung.
Long live U Maung Maung. I will support his PLO inside Burma. He is now the prime minister of new exile government just formed. He now formed a new army and special forces to give the military good lessons.

It is true. No one has succeeded in even bringing a glimmer of change in Burma. There is no Person of the Year for Burma. Not this time.
But I can say in my opinion, U Than Shwe, U Maung Aye and U Thein Sein and Daw Su can do soon.

I vote for U Maung Maung.
While I do give all my respect to (1) Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
(2) Ko Min Ko Naing and other leaders inside Burma, I believe we need to also promote leaders from outside who have been sacrificing their lives and families for our country’s freedom.
To my knowledge, U Maung Maung has challenged and attacked the SPDC for so many years now.His achievements include, but may not be limited to, ILO involvement, prosecuting UNOCAL, CredentialS Challenge, leading the NCUB for two terms consecutively and to help implement its comprehensive program to attack the SPDC.

We need to promote U Maung Maung because he is forming a new government. After that he can meet Obama who will give him money and weapons to fight the Burmese regime. The regime accused U Maung Maung for terrorist acts. It is not true. U Maung Maung did not intend to kill civilians. His men only target buildings and objects, such as trash cans. He is a true hero and Burma’s Obama. Support U Maung Maung for more battles inside Burma.

Pu Chin Sian Thang
Because I really think that without Chinese or Burmese of Chinese origin or Indians born in Myanmar for the moment,
the future of Burma will be difficult.

I nominate the Christian Community in Myanmar who are followers of Jesus Christ. He too faced a military government and his way works. Everyone of goodwill joins the Kingdom of Heaven and vows to follow the teachings of Jesus to be found in the Gospel of Matthew. In the catacombs (caves around Rome) are the graves of more than 500,000 Christians who died in the years after the birth of Jesus because they believed the Christian way, killed by the Military dictatorship of the time. The evil Roman Empire crumbled in the face of the tide of human goodness and love and became the foundation of 2000 years of western European civilisation.
The government Myanmar is persecuting the Christian movement but this will lead to the destruction of the Rulers and powers that dominate. All Burmese peoples, all religions, all creeds, all nations are welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven. There is no other qualification other than to declare oneself a follower of Jesus Christ. All past wrongs are forgotten in that declaration. From that moment all is new and good.
The Christian people of Myanmar are holding a torch for the Kingdom of Heaven for all to see. If every person in Myanmar becomes a follower of Jesus Christ the powers and evil doers will die and flee from the light.
I nominate the Christians of Myanmar.

Naw Zipporah Sein
She has lived in a Thai refugee camp since 1995, where she now leads the Karen Women’s Organization as its General Secretary.
She reflects, “I was born in the area of the widest and most serious armed conflicts, an area where thousands of women still suffer everyday. I was a schoolteacher in this war zone for twenty years. As a schoolteacher, what I found most difficult to talk about with my students was peace and security.”
She has devoted her life to helping refugees, and especially to improving the situation for all Burmese women.

I personally choose U Win Tin for the Burmese Person of the Year 2008.
No doubt, he is one of the best to lead Burma in our struggle for genuine democracy.
