  His step father Ne Win taught him to do so. You see, the Shwe Dagon Pagoda is almost always covered with bamboo scaffolding and mats scince Ne Win was in power. Who knows how much gold was stolen when the pagoda was renovated by the Ne Win regime more than twenty years ago. All the gold plates were taken off and replaced with new plates. Lots of money and gold were donated by the people at that time.
