One Response to “Burma Navy”

  • #1 KT Lwin Says:

I used to be a member of the Burma Navy and Burma RNVR from 1944-1952.
Just after WWII in 1946 ,our flotilla of six Fairmile type MLs in which I was in command of one of them, were on exercises off the Arakan coast , and we received a ( fake) s.o.s signal from a position midway in the Bay of Bengal
( which was sent out by R.I.N.mutineers in Bombay ) to get the ships out to sea.

WE proceeded at top speed to the s.o.s position , reached at night and saw some lights.
All of a sudden , from the darkness there was some flashing challenging us

    ” What SHIP ”

We were wondering what is this cocky merchant ship wanting to know us -

    so we replied ” N A V Y “.

We were answered from the same source ” WHAT NAVY ”

We thought, this Guy is getting cockier – so answered ” BURMA NAVY ” and expected that would be the end of the exchange.

All of a sudden , we were answered by brighter 20 inch signalling searchlight with brilliant beam ” WE ARE ROYAL NAVY EASTERN FLEET ”
YOU BOYS GO BACK HOME TO MAMA – GOOD NIGHT ”
It turned out to be the British battlleship H.M.S ” Queen Elizabeth ” which was also tricked by the same faked s.o.s signal to get them out of Trincomalee Naval Base.

    Times have changed since then!
