YANGON, Nov. 19 (Kyodo) – Myanmar’s detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with the junta’s liaison minister for the third time Monday as part of a U.N. effort to achieve national reconciliation in the military-ruled country, official sources said.
Suu Kyi, currently under house arrest, was driven to a state guesthouse in Yangon around 3 p.m. to meet with Aung Kyi, who has been appointed by the junta as the minister to deal with her, the sources said.
Suu Kyi and Aung Kyi first met on Oct. 25 and then on Nov. 9, when she was also allowed to meet with leaders of her National League for Democracy for the first time in more than three years.
Details of the meetings have not been disclosed.
The junta said Oct. 4 that its top leader Sr. Gen. Than Shwe would hold talks with Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest for 12 of the past 18 years, if she abandons her confrontational stance and stops calling on other countries to impose sanctions.
After its senior members were allowed to meet with her on Nov. 9, the NLD’s spokesman said she is “optimistic” about national reconciliation and believes the junta has the “will” to achieve it.
