“Respect Myanmar Liberty”
Oct 6th, 2007

I have seen this grafitti today in the center of Bucharest-it says “Respect Myanmar Liberty”-in Romanian language. Of course, my first thought was to take a photo of it and share it with you on the blog-I find it most hearwarming that an urban hip Romanian graffer shares a message of solidarity with the freedom fighters in Burma.
While taking this photo, I couldn’t help but think about Burmese bloggers . Those bravbe people, who have taken photos of the Buddhist monks protesters being brutally repressed and published them-at the risk of being imprisoned or killed. Having the priviledge to live in a democratic countries, where I’ve got nothing to fear for sharing this image on a blog, I guess it’s the least I can do to show a little solidarity with those who would risk their lives for something like this.
You know, it has been the first time in a very long while that I have seen news about Burma on Romanian television, three days in a row and the first time I’ve seen a two-pages report about Burma in a Romanian newspaper. I don’t know how much do we, media readers in democratic countries, realise to whom we owe the information that is daily delivered to us. Take, for example, the many recent photo diaries that appeared here, in the Burma Digest; a lot of the photos that we used come from people inside Burma-who had the courage to take photos and to share them. Without them, there might not have been any media awareness of the uprising at all. I can’t help but wonder-how many of our readers are thinking about the people that took those shocking photos, so that we can see them and react?
The military regime has resorted to extreme measures in order to stop this phenomenon- including murder, pollitical arrests and even the unbelievably absurd shutting down of the internet. But they cannot stop information for circulating-one way or another. As people who have the right to do what Burmese bloggers don’t, it is our duty to keep it going on. This is an appeal to solidarity for all of our readers who have got a personal blog: please write a post on your blog about the monks uprising or about the brave bloggers in Burma- you may also include some pictures, if you can. Then leave a comment here and let us know of the link. Thank you very much.
