This week we commemorate the fallen heroes of Burma’s independence struggle with ‘Martyr’s Day’. It is a measure of the man that we remember Aung San more notably than any other Thakin or political leader from that era as the father of the independence movement. Aung San had the drive, energy and [...]

Like Lenin for Russians, and George Washington for Americans, Aung San is the unrivalled hero of Burma. He is the Architect of Burma’s Independence; the Founder of the Union of Burma; the Creator of Burma’s armed forces called Tatmadaw; the Mentor for all people of Burma; the political God over all Burmese politicians [...]

I
Eruption of
Vesuvius volcano
Was quite scenic to look at
From Capri Island, it was said so
As Pompeii
Lies buried under lava
How’s that, Mr. Gambari? Are you really shaken? That’s the New Ode to the Holy Sky poem by [...]

The Speaking Flower
A FLOWER GREW ON TROPICAL SOIL
ITS PETALS WAXEN WHITE,
ITS CENTRE CRIMSON;
THE PEOPLE KNELT
AND SMELT HER
INTOXICATING FRAGRANCE
AND THEN FELT
MYSTERIOUSLY – FREE.
SOON THE FLOWER
WAS TRANSPLANTED
ONTO YONDER SHORES,
IT BLOSSOMED,
SPROUTED LIMBS,
SWAYING IN THE WIND,
IT BREATHED THE BREEZE
OF LIBERTY.
ONE DAY,
THE FLOWER RETURNED;
STRIKING HER ORIGINAL SOIL
HER COLOURS IGNITED;
FROM HER PETALS
CRIMSON ROSE ENFLAMED:
‘EVEN THE SEARING HEAT
CAN NOT ERASE
THE BLOOD
ON THE [...]

Be recognised, accepted and heard as a deadly virus
Thousands are internally displaced and preyed on
And ethnic nationalities oppressed and forgotten
Whose villages and houses, bulldozed and burnt down
Yet their plights [...]
