To Stop Double Taxation by Burmese Embassies in ASEAN
Jan 30th, 2007
A group of expatriate Burmese in Singapore is trying to remove unfair and unjust double taxation practice that Myanmar citizens living and working in Singapore despite the fact that there is a Comprehensive Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) signed between Singapore and Myanmar.
With the advice of a very competent law professional (an international income tax law expert and professor from NUS), they have already established several communications and discussions with competent Singapore tax authorities in accordance with the procedure mentioned in the article 26 of Singapore - Myanmar DTA.
As directed in the article 26, Singapore tax authorities are officially looking into this matter and the next logical step is to prepare a solid case on this issue to be officially communicated to the competent tax authorities in Myanmar.
Singapore Myanmar Comprehensive Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) is an agreement signed between Singapore and Myanmar Government to ensure that their residents do not have to pay tax twice for the same income they receive.
Myanmar has signed the DTA also with UK. Myanmar citizens in the UK don’t have to pay income tax to Myanmar Embassy there if they can prove that they’ve paid tax to the UK Inland Revenue.
Burmese Government has also signed DTA with some ASEAN countries like Singapore, Vietnam etc. but they never practise it. Burmese Embassies usually refuse to give passport renewals if the applicant has not given the double-tax. We have to demand that this practice must end to ensure the proper implementation of DTA agreements Burmese government has signed with regional neighbouring countries.
If you are paying a double tax to Burmese government, please join in this historic campaign by completing the Double-Taxation Fact Sheet below and send it to DTASG-owner@yahoogroups.com .
