For Sale: Rangoon University
Aug 27th, 2006
I think we need to do something about it, if rumors were true that Burmese government put Rangoon University (main) campus for sale and one party of interest is Singapore Polytechnics. This is not confirmed yet though.
I think its buildings and environment should not be put for sale. It is regarded as sacred as the Shwedagon pagoda, Independence monument, etc..
It is also a symbol of Burmese nationalism, independence and prestige. We have nostalgia for it too and this will be too much for us to bear.
We should think how serious this issue is. Once the state sells or lease a part of country, next generation cannot do anything: Hong Kong was sold to British government by Manchu emperors of old China, Alaska was sold to United States by Czarist Russia.
If they were serious to sell the whole prime location, including those Judson, Convocation hall, residence halls, etc.. then it is a call for all Burmese educated to university level in Burma. I dont mind they they do other not-so-clever things. But this time, what I feel offended most is that, they want to sell something to bury the history, our heritage will belong to a low level vocational school (Singapore Polytechnic). It is as bad as selling it to a crony business man, wipe out all and develop buildings for those new-riches with drug money.
My blood boils even thinking about it. This is too much.
I don’t know what to do but what I have thought of means to block it are follows: _
1. Contact Singapore Polytechnic, confirm with those in PR/Admin dept.
2. Make a formal petition against it to Singapore and Burmese embassy.
3. We could write an article and send to the Strait Times news paper or the other tabloid which has more chances of being published.
Surely it will demonize Singapore in the eyes of a common Burmese.
It may invoke anger and retaliation of those who commit above acts from Burmese authorities back home but since it is beneficial for Singapore for its strategic interests in the region, I don’t think there will be problems from Singaporean authorities.
I think we need to be sure the correctness of this news and act before too late.

what are we going to make?let me think about that what should we do and how our effort will affect to burmese junta.if we can stop them seeling our precious and one of the monuments for burma, the Rangoon Universtiy,we should use our energy.in otherwise we should not use our energy.actually i am 18 years old and i want to be an engineer since i was young.i never try to become a doctor what my parents want me to be.and i am not clever einohg to be a doctor.actually i love RIt and my mum gratuatd her degree from RIT.i love it so much and whenver i pass it and i was gazing it all the timebut i lost the chance to study at RIT because when i passed my maticulation examination RIT was closed down alsready.that’s why i am now studying in singapore as a foregin student.sometimes i am looked down .i do not care but the worst thing and the thing i regert myself all the time i cannot spend my time in RIT.i know i can get very good education in singapore but then i am still missing and regerting about losing chance to get RITactually some of the people may woder but it is not a ver y surprise thing which is i was born in 1988,1988was the ver y special year for students and we can never forget about the day we called it four eights.i think i was too young at that time like 5mmonths old.but my grandma told me about what happend in 1988and how people are suffered and how peple are struggling and how their life are hard and so on..i also love the RASU,innya lake and ah-di-pa-di road.i have never studied there but now the government never upgrade and they never maitainthe things in unverstyies which were built in british time.i think actually we should thank to british government even they colonized our country they have done everythingfor our public in their tome.eventhough they are colonial, they were not too bad like our recent government.but then u know now if we go around RASU and RIT.there are alots of rubbish near the theratre, classrooms and all the hostels like Yamanya or Ava and so on.when i see that kind of scences i am really upset.and i want to go back a bit about i lost my chance to study at RIT.but now if we are tyring to stop them i think we may not be too late.we should try something.something is better than nothing always.actually i am too young to understand about the politics and i do not understand politics very well.i am just petrioraism.i love my country ,language,my culture.my traditional food and my tradition i love everything concerns with burma.i do not want to break up my country .that’s all my idea.i want to get peace and rights.i think actually our burmese people need dicipline and understanding each other. as long as we can do good things abnd love our countyr and we should think about how to improve our country and how to make it to become a developed country and the most important thing is how to draw the rule and regulations of country,

Really! Yangon University will be sold to Singapore Poly! I don’t believe that is true. Even if the Myanmar Government want to sell, I don’t think Singpore would buy it because it will affect the friendship between Myanmar and Singpore as well as political stability of both country.
There is also no benifit Singapore can gain from buying Yangon University, except the angers of Myanmar people in Myanmar and all over the world. This is not an issue between Myanmar and Singapore. If it is really true, that’s will be a global issue and the impact would be disasterous.

You know what - they might just do it and I don’t know if the Singapore government cares about angering Burmese people. It’s such a pity. The Burmese government has like no sense I mean, well, I shall say no further because they are just ridiculous. I just hope they dont’ sell it. I mean, they sell everythingin our country away - gems, people, water, electricity, fish… what the hell .. why not just sell the whole country to Singapore. shoot, maybe I shouldn’t have suggested that. They might do it.

The junta is going too far and messing all the way to get to its goal without looking back what it has done. I feel no doubt the military regime will sell out all the wives and daughters of top brass if necessary.

To my knowledge, a branch of Singapore Polytechnic was once to be open in Rangoon and this was accordingly with the plan of the late dictator’s daughter (Sandar Win). But, when all the dictator’s grandsons who had tried to stage a coup were eventually arrested, the Polytechnic issue has disappeared since then. If Singapore is keen to buy the Rangoon campus may I warn against Singapore not to try to open a new chapter of economic invasion to your history that will never accept by people of Burma.
