It is most admirable perhaps those countries in the international community are gearing up to take the Karen refugees, including Canada. Isn't this move actually assisting and aiding the SPDC regime in Burma to solve their "ethnic cleansing" problem, their policies of cultural and actual genocide on the shoulders of [...]

The Conservative Party Human Rights Commission's (a newly formed umbrella group of the UK Conservative Party) hearing on human rights conditions in Burma towards the end of last month dazzled the "leftie" supporters of democracy movement in Burma. The Conservative Party is seen as the party of business and free market but not the human [...]

“What above all was borne in upon me was the sense that the army assumed that it was untouchable, that it could never be called to account, indeed, many of the atrocities were simply a direct expression of arrogance, a demonstration of supremacy.”……Pascal Khoo Thwe – “From the Land of Green Ghosts”

Dear Editor,
I hope that you and some of the Burmese Digest readers could recalled my name in association with my best friend Ko Tin New (Bo Aung Din). He had mentioned a few times about me in his a dozen Compassionate letters to Nan. As he had mentioned, my grandfather was a Burmese Muslim and [...]

Otherwise, if an equitable, peaceful reconciliation cannot be achieved, then soon the Burman Empire will fall —in a manner [...]

Marching to glory
Or only to cemetery,
Where to we are?
For both the Better!
Must become a tidal wave
To spill the society
Sure do we must!
To root these evil formation out
These devils productions
The Organisms breeding filth
Controlling from the sector of guilt
Since 1962;
Once evil has started, evil controls
Generating evil souls after greed and powers

In the book Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes, wrote in 1642 about a minimalist state which was strangely similar to the present day Myanmar and SPDC Junta. Let’s compare that Leviathan State with the Myanmar under successive Military Dictators.

In the darkness ….I saw an angel……
I cry for my pain…nobody feel like me
I shout for my suffering…nobody hear my stunning screams
I crawl like a ill-dog… they are laughing at me
I beg for mercy…they are ignoring me
I fall down as a puppet…They kick my head as a football
When red-blood come out…from my mouth
They are like [...]

So, naturally, there is no need for us to regard SPDC generals as legitimate [...]

There are several metatheories of mass social movements. Setting them aside, I would like to explore a theory of mass social movements which may be the most relevant to Burmese political context.
